Privacy Policy for Escape The Paper

Effective date: April 19, 2026

Escape The Paper is a budgeting app for macOS. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app processes, where that information is stored, and the choices you have.

Summary

  • Your budget data is stored on your Mac in budget files you create or open.
  • The app stores some settings and recent-file information locally on your device.
  • The app can request permission to send local notifications.
  • The current codebase does not include third-party analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or built-in cloud sync operated by us.
  • The app sandbox only allows access to files you explicitly choose.

Information We Process

When you use Escape The Paper, the app may process:

  • Budget data you create or import, such as transactions, categories, tags, goals, targets, notes, and related budgeting information.
  • CSV files you choose to import.
  • Export and archive files you choose to create.
  • App preferences and settings, such as display preferences, currency selection, sorting preferences, notification settings, app lock mode, and income-related preferences.
  • Recent budget metadata needed to reopen files you previously selected, including security-scoped bookmarks and recent file references stored locally by macOS-compatible APIs.

How We Use Information

The app uses this information to:

  • Open, display, edit, and save your budgets.
  • Import transaction data from CSV files you choose.
  • Export or archive your budget data when you ask it to.
  • Remember your settings and preferences.
  • Reopen recently used budgets you selected.
  • Show reminders, badges, and local notifications about app activity such as uncategorized transactions.
  • Generate analytics and suggestions inside the app.

Where Data Is Stored

Budget data is stored locally on your device.

The app does not implement developer-operated cloud storage or remote account systems.

Notifications

Escape The Paper may ask for permission to send notifications on your Mac. If you allow notifications, the app may schedule local notifications and update the dock badge. Notification preferences are stored locally on your device.

You can change notification permissions at any time in macOS System Settings and in the app's settings, where available.

File Access and macOS Permissions

Escape The Paper is a sandboxed macOS app. It can access files and folders that you explicitly choose through macOS file pickers or related system mechanisms.

To help reopen a budget you previously selected, the app may store macOS security-scoped bookmarks or recent-file references locally on your device. These are used to restore access to files you already chose.

Analytics, Advertising, and Tracking

Based on the current codebase:

  • We do not use third-party advertising SDKs.
  • We do not use third-party analytics SDKs in the app.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not track you across third-party apps or websites for advertising purposes.

If a future version adds analytics, crash reporting, cloud features, or third-party services, this Privacy Policy will be updated before release.

AI or Automated Suggestions

The app includes transaction suggestion and categorization features. These are primarily generated locally from your existing budget data and rules inside the app.

The codebase also includes an optional system-model classification path on supported versions of macOS. If that functionality is available and used on your device, any processing related to Apple's system intelligence features is governed by Apple's platform behavior and privacy terms, not by a separate server operated by us.

Data Sharing

We do not share your budget data with third parties through the current app implementation, except where information is handled by platform features you choose to use, such as macOS notifications or Apple system services.

If you export, archive, move, sync, or back up your files using third-party tools or cloud storage providers that you choose, their privacy practices apply to those copies.

Data Retention

Your data remains on your device until you delete it, remove the app, or delete the relevant files and settings.

Recent-file references, bookmarks, and settings may remain stored locally until they are cleared, overwritten, or removed as part of normal app or system behavior.

Your Choices

  • Choose which files to open or import.
  • Decline notification permissions.
  • Change notification settings later in macOS.
  • Delete budget files, exports, archives, or imported data you no longer want.
  • Remove the app and its local data from your device.

Children's Privacy

Escape The Paper is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through a developer-operated online service in the current version of the app.

International Users

If you use the app outside your home country, your data will generally remain on the device and services you choose to use. If you use third-party storage, backup, sync, or platform intelligence features, those providers may process data under their own terms and jurisdictions.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we should update the effective date above and publish the revised policy with the app or on the app's website.
